With a commanding driving position, practical interior and rugged looks it’s not hard to see why SUVs are so popular.

From small and cost-effective to big and upmarket, there’s an SUV that could be just right for you. To help you pick your perfect fit, here are our 10 best used SUVs.

1. Land Rover Discovery Sport

The Land Rover Discovery Sport is the smaller, more affordable alternative to the large and luxurious seven-seat Land Rover Discovery. You still get seven seats, so there’s plenty of space for Grandma and Grandpa in the back if the kids hop in the third row for a trip to the seaside. The Discovery Sport will cost you a lot less than the full-size Discovery, though, and it’ll fit in a much smaller parking space.

You also get a similarly solid, upmarket interior to Land Rover’s larger models, as well as the latest safety equipment and the option of useful features such as front and rear parking sensors and a 360-degree camera that gives you a bird's eye view of the car (on the centre display) that makes parking simpler still.

All Discovery Sports sold new since 2020 have mild-hybrid technology, which makes them more fuel-efficient, and if you do need to go off-road there are few cars better suited to it than a Land Rover.

2. Volvo XC60

If you prioritise a luxurious interior and a smooth ride, the Volvo XC60 is a car to seriously consider. You get extremely comfortable seats in all models (most also have leather trim) and there’s lots of legroom and headroom for adults in the back.

As you’d expect of a Volvo, the XC60 comes with a lot of safety features as standard. You also get Bluetooth, sat nav, cruise control and a 9-inch infotainment screen that’ll placate even the hardest-to-impress teenager.

The Volvo XC60 has a wide range of engines to choose from and there’s also a plug-in hybrid model (initially called Twin Engine but since renamed Recharge), which can dramatically improve your fuel-efficiency if you keep the battery topped up regularly.

3. Volkswagen Tiguan

It’s easy to see why the Volkswagen Tiguan is a popular option for families. It’s a great all-rounder, mixing a premium feel with a quiet and comfortable driving experience. If you choose the Tiguan Allspace model you also get a third row of seats, giving you space for seven people, which is unusual for a SUV of this size and price.

All versions of the Tiguan come with an 8-inch infotainment touchscreen, through which you can control your smartphone apps using Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. You can also get a row of easy-to-use buttons underneath, which makes it simpler to switch between functions. The car’s smart interior is easy to clean and very practical and the exterior is sleek and understated.

Fuel economy is impressively low in the most popular models and a plug-in hybrid version called the eHybrid is also available, which can travel on electric-only power for short distances. Many Tiguans have front-wheel drive but you can also find four-wheel-drive models, which could be useful if you live in an area with poor road conditions, or regularly venture off-road.

4. Ford Kuga

The Kuga is a great choice for people who want a bit more space than a hatchback but don’t want a large car.Models made from 2020 onwards (as pictured) are all-new, with a wide, large front grille, new higher-quality interior materials and a touchscreen infotainment system. There are mild-hybrid and plug-in hybrid options for the latest model, which is ideal if you want the full SUV experience but have an eye on your environmental impact and running costs.

All post-2020 Kugas have loads of standard tech, including Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and voice control, and you can get wireless phone charging and keyless start on more expensive trims. If you find the endless trims and engine choices overwhelming, then the older pre-2020 Kuga’s one petrol and two diesel engine choices are refreshingly simple.Read our Ford Kuga review

5. Range Rover Sport

If you want a fun, more affordable version of the full-size Range Rover then take a look at Land Rover’s Range Rover Sport.

As the name suggests you’ll find the Sport very nimble for a car of this size, yet it’s still a true Land Rover and is more than capable of some proper off-roading. Manoeuvring in the city is easy thanks to the parking sensors at both ends, which will help you guide this large car into tight spaces.

Range Rovers are famous for their interior quality and feel and the Range Rover Sport doesn’t disappoint with leather seats, dual touchscreens and the option of a full-length panoramic sunroof. It’s one of the most luxurious SUVs out there but it’s still very practical and comes with a huge boot and loads of compartments for the kids to store all their gadgets in.All trims come with powerful petrol, diesel and plug-in hybrid options so there’s lots of choice for different lifestyles and requirements.

6. Audi Q5

There’s strong competition from the BMW X3, Volvo XC60, Jaguar F-Pace and Mercedes-Benz GLC, but the Audi Q5’s spacious interior, superb quality and comprehensive engine range make it stand out in a competitive category.

It’s available with a range of petrol and diesel models, and if you’re after a company car then the plug-in hybrid version of the Q5 makes a lot of sense because you’ll benefit from lower tax bands. All Q5s have clear and easy-to-use infotainment systems, smart digital dials and most of the comfort and tech features you could want, so don’t feel you have to go for the more expensive trims – even the entry-level Q5 models feel luxurious. It feels safe and relaxing to drive – more sensible than sporty. With understated looks, the Q5 is a good bet if you want a refined, everyday SUV that’s comfortable and roomy enough for a family of four.

7. Skoda Kodiaq

The Skoda Kodiaq does just about everything you could want – and probably a bit more – for a great price.

It’s available with five or seven seats, ideal for weekends with the grandparents or car-pooling on the school run. There’s a good variety of engines and you can choose from two-wheel drive or four-wheel drive. It’s easy to find a well-kitted-out mid-level trim that combines value and comfort. If you want a sportier feel then the vRS model gives you dramatic looks and more power.

The Skoda Kodiaq is a pleasing balance of affordability, practicality, smart styling and modern tech – just like an all-round family SUV should be.

8. Nissan Qashqai

The original Nissan Qashqai was one of the original compact, road-focused SUVs and the latest models will give you great interior quality at an affordable price.

The tech in newer models includes a 12.3-inch touchscreen that’s super-fast to respond and sits high on the dash so it’s very easy to use while you’re on the move. Nissan has stacked the Qashqai with excellent safety features across all trims, including automatic emergency braking and blind-spot assist. You can choose between manual or automatic gearboxes and opt for four-wheel drive if you want it. All options are easy to drive and comfortable on long journeys.

The latest-generation Qashqai (sold new from 2021, pictured) has mild-hybrid technology across all trims, which helps to lower your fuel costs.

9. Mercedes-Benz GLC

The luxurious Mercedes GLC is very spacious for a mid-size SUV and has a big boot, so it happily competes with roomy rivals like the BMW X3 or Volvo XC60. You can pack for a family of five on a summer holiday and still give your dog plenty of space to look out the back. And if you fancy a bit of light off-roading, the GLC also comes with four-wheel drive as standard.

The Mercedes GLC has reasonable running costs across most trims, and you should be able to find one that has every feature you need, even if your budget doesn’t stretch to the top level. You can choose between two diesel engines and one petrol engine, or go for a plug-in hybrid model, which gives you short distances on electric-only power, saving you on fuel costs.

10. BMW X5

The BMW X5 is sporty to drive and has a cabin that can – with the right options added – hold its own alongside super-luxury cars. The X5 comes with great diesel and petrol engine options, as well as a plug-in hybrid that has lots of power and a long electric-only range of up to 60 miles.

If you need more space for a large family then some X5s were fitted with seven seats as an option when new, whereas the Audi Q7 and Volvo XC90 have seven seats as standard. That third row of seats has less space than the Q7 or XC90 but adults and children alike can jump in for shorter drives. The BMW X5 can easily handle light off-roading and can tow up to 3,500kg, so it’s a great choice if you need to tow a caravan or horsebox.
